VU Visualization 2 consists of a lecture part and an exercise part. The lecture part consists of a series of special lectures, which are spread over the semester. The exercise part consists of the implementation of a current (< 10 years old) visualization technique based on a scientific article. The exercise should be performed in groups of two.

How do you keep communication and feedback with students active throughout the semester?

Especially by using TUWEL.

Lecture: in summer term 2020 deliberately intensified (each lecture was announced as TUWEL Announcement with a corresponding Zoom Link)

What kind of performance assessment is conducted for this lecture?

Oral lecture examination (40%)

Exercise (implementation plan 5%, concept presentation 5%, implementation 40%, final presentation 10%)

What kind of extraordinary challenges do you see in performing this lecture in distance learning?

Lecture (general for all courses):

  • Difficult communication with students
  • Students do not dare to ask questions
  • Connection problems are often not noticeable for the speaker


  • Students seem to have a much harder time finding a partner for group work, so we had many individual groups and some of them did not complete the exercise
    → Call for "partner search" in TUWEL Forum at the beginning of the semester can solve the problem
  • 5-minute presentations of students is more complicated and time consuming to conduct
  • Open Labs always had a very informal and personal character, which could not be maintained via Zoom
  • The Best Assignment Award is typically a bar of chocolate and had to be converted into a PDF certificate this year :(

What special positive experiences do you had?

All student presentations were done without technical problems and with great discipline of the students, so that the exercise could be done in the same mode as before (but we needed more appointments).

What wishes do you have to support the sustainable development of digital learning at the TU Wien?

A very big disadvantage seems to be the reduced contact between students, which can be a problem especially for newcomers. In our lecture, this has been shown by a very high proportion of individual groups in the exercise. Perhaps a dedicated social media channel, where students can informally network in different study and lecture groups, can help. Probably the TU Chat is very well suited for this, but I don't know how intensively it is actually used. Probably a medium would have to be recruited specifically by the TU / ÖH as a default exchange channel between students so that a critical mass is used.

Do you see your concept as an emergency solution under the current circumstances or as a sustainable extension of your teaching?

I prefer teaching in a lecture hall rather than in my bedroom ;) and I like to see my students live in front of me so that I know who I am talking to. Therefore, this is a clear emergency solution from me personally, but it is better than teaching in a lecture hall with a mask.

Remote Lectures are a very attractive solution for external lecturers and therefore they are definitely welcome as an extension for the lecture.

Further remarks

The TU has provided very good technical infrastructure and instructions to cope with this situation.
