Blog

A roar went through the crowd when this video was shown on the big screen:
Our colleagues at IMT are hosting the next Student Conference at IMT Nord Europe in 2025

However, first things first; From 30 June to 4 July TU Wien welcomed more than 180 students from all EULiST partner universities. Additionally, more than 30 speakers and volunteers helped make the conference a success.
Participants enjoyed several workshops sessions and a social programme besides the opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful cities in the world. TU Wien’s very own Shabnam Tauböck, Gergely Rakoczi, Florina Piroi, Tomasz Miksa, Filip Kovacevic, Gregor Fischer and the TU Wien Career Center contributed to six workshops, representing more than a fifth of workshops.

More information on the workshop held by Florina Piroi and Tomasz Miksa here.

Many participants mentioned the pitch sessions and EULiST Fair as their highlights. There participants had the opportunity to present the topics they are passionate about. From an array of different titles like “Is real science behind TV shows?”, “Levitated nanoparticles as super precision sensors” and “Electric Powertrain for Small Aircrafts” students could present their work within their job, research or volunteering to other students, following the motto of “From students for students”. The EULiST Fair gave the concept of pitch sessions a twist. Here participants (and some speakers) presented their work in the form of posters and other hands-on materials. Onlookers had the opportunity to engage the originators.

The key note lecture showed the interdisciplinarity on offer during the conference. First Frank Piplat from the European Parliament Liaison Office in Vienna gave a speech and answered questions from participants in an extensive Q&A session. Then Peter Lorenz an acclaimed Austrian architect delved into urban planning and architecture. Peter Lorenz's lecture marked the final event of the first EULiST Student Conference.

All in all, both EULiST and TU Wien profited from the Student Conference in multiple ways. Creating a network that identifies with EULiST and is eager to be engaged. Task groups in WP 2 and WP 3 could collect insights on what students think in their matter. Vienna and TU Wien showcased what they have going for them which includes very engaged and bright students, which is, among other things, bright, research-oriented students with both a beautiful campus and city.

Thank you

The EULiST Student Board and the organizing committee I would like to thank TU Wien, especially the Rectorate, TU Wien Career Center, International Office, the Student Union at TU Wien (HTU) and Metal Technology Austria for making this event happen.

Furthermore, we extend a special shout out to the people involved in the organization.

May Update

Developments

  • An EULiST Support Office at TU Wien for roughly 50 project participants. 2.5 full-time-equivalent colleagues coordinate and support EULiST efforts at TU Wien.
  • The Code of Conduct was finalised and approved in April. Together with the Consortium Agreement, which is about to be finished, these form the cornerstone for a future EULiST legal entity.
  • TU Wien does advocate for an EULiST-branded integrated communication. We expect an initial agreement during the upcoming General Assembly.
  • Micro-credentials form an integral part of EULiST's strategy in teaching and learning. A task force led by Leibniz University Hannover and TU Wien is working on this concept's technical and conceptual design.
  • Together with Leibniz University Hannover and Technische Informationsbibliothek (based in Hannover), TU Wien concluded the first deliverable by creating an inventory of catalogue and data services at EULiST partners. This deliverable is the first step in creating an EULiST Open Knowledge Hub.
  • The upcoming winter semester will see the start of TU Wien and Leibniz University Hannover's joint Double Degree Programme in Computer Science and Logic and Computation.

March Update

Madrid Staff Week

From 26 to 29 February, Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC) invited EULiST and overseas partners to an International Staff Week. The emphasis was put on getting to know URJC. TU Wien's 15-person delegation was treated to three campus visits, all located outside the city of Madrid.

Highlights were the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in Aranjuez, the aeronautic hangar, and the sports facilities in Fuenlabrada. Nonetheless, the representative halls at Mostoles and Aranjuez were no less impressive. Considering the focus laid on team building activities and showcasing the host university, time for formal meetings was in short supply. Still, colleagues expressed their gratitude for an opportunity to engage with their counterparts. Within the fast-paced programme, a few additional ad-hoc meetings were organised to tackle open questions leftover from initial meetings. A communication plan presented by URJC was heavily discussed by participants. Introductions by URJC's overseas partners gave a glimpse into universities in the Americas, Africa, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The hosts certainly spared no effort in exhibiting Madrid and its cultural features. This culminated in a tour through Madrid's prestigious Museo del Prado, followed by a dinner accompanied by a string quintet from URJC's own orchestra. Furthermore, URJC showed its alliance-leading capabilities in creating EULiST branded merchandise. Finally, on behalf of TU Wien's delegation, we would like to thank URJC's organising team (Juan Manuel, Elena, and Paloma, just to name a few) for a wonderful week.

 Impressions

Student Board Meeting LUT

After a meeting in Madrid in parallel with Staff Week proved not viable, the student board sought an alternative host. Lappeenranta University of Technology kindly offered to accommodate student representatives. Eventually, 14 delegates from eight member universities met from 22 to 24 February. They discussed a range of topics, including the Student Conference, The road map and PR-related matters. Arguably, the most important decision taken was to define the pronunciation of EULiST. "Youlist" won decisively over "e-u-list".

Actually, icy roads and paths proved to be the toughest obstacle faced during the meeting. Otherwise, participants were treated to a wonderful room overlooking the snowy LUT campus. On one occasion, city representatives invited the student board for a reception in the town hall, where the benefits of EULiST for Lappeenranta were discussed. Additionally, a glimpse into Finnish student culture formed an integral part of the programme. This included the Finnish equivalents of TU Wien's Fachschaften, which were carefully inspected by the Austrian delegates. Naturally, a visit to Finland wouldn't be complete without some time at the sauna. This particular one was beautifully located by Lake Saimaa, Europe's fourth biggest natural lake.

The TU Wien delegation, formed by Simon, Ramon, and Gregor, expresses their gratitude to LUT and our colleagues Niilo and Robin, who did a fantastic job hosting us and putting up an amazing programme.

November Update

February Staff Week Madrid

From 26 to 29 February 2024 URJC is organising an International Staff Week in Madrid.

The Staff Week is designed with two main objectives, on the one hand for the different staff members of your institutions to meet their counterparts, to present the potential and capabilities of each institution, and on the other hand, to meet partners of Global South and look for potential lines of collaboration aligned with EULiST. The agenda shall follow in the coming weeks.

To participate please register here until 22 November 2023.

Student Activity

After the General Assembly the Student Board had several meetings online. Furthermore, a short-term opportunity to attend the Staff Week in Bratislava arose. Over three days up to eight members worked on questions like "What would make EULiST a success in four years?" or "What marks an European Student?". Results were presented to other Staff Week participants. This presentation included a roadmap of activities and goals for the coming four years. In an important step, the governance of the student board was formalised too.

Remarkably, the student board has had four online/hybrid meetings and one in presence meeting since June 2023. This makes it one of the most active groups within EULiST. Consequently, the student board also brought up the issue of secured funding for travel and accommodation costs during EULiST and SB activities.

SB Staff Week presentation (pptx in SharePoint)

During the Governing Board Kick-Off five representatives from the Student Board were present in Hannover. Again we could present our vision to delegates from member universities, three from TU Wien. Special attention deserves the student conference which was included in the operational plan. The student board is establishing a working group to make the student conference happen in summer 2024. After remarks from the SB the governing board decided to expand the advisory council by two student board nominees. Finally, SB members could meet their current and future delegates from Leibniz University Hannover.

Congratulations to the TU Wien and all participants involved!

The European Commission has granted the funding for the EUI EULIST in 07/2023.

Actions will start in autumn the same year.

WELL DONE everybody!

It was very close! We nearly did it - but unfortunaley 81 of 100 points was not enough.

  • Relevance 20 of 25
  • Quality project design & implementation 18 of 25 → feedback will be requested (explanatory text and points do not match)
  • Quality partnership & cooperation arrangements 23 of 25
  • Impact 20 of 25

(For details see Proposal Result)

Nevertheless we are far beyound the threshold 70 points and all the given feedback is totally managable. Therefore we will try again this fall (call opening 11/22, call closing 03/23). Especially with this feedback:

“The alliance has considerable potential to act as a role model, as innovative, and co- university structures are foreseen that will enable the implementation of joint programmes, joint research, seamless mobility, and the creation of new knowledge.”

Thank you very much again to all participants!!!!

The Coordination Office has yet executed the first Live Meeting after submitting the application.
