For both the "Seminar with a seminar paper" and the "Project with bachelor thesis", you’re generally free to choose any topic that interests you. The current FAM curriculum [full text/curriculum document (PDF)] doesn’t restrict you to a particularfield of specialization.
However, it generally makes sense to select courses that are relevant to the curriculum. Below is a list of the courses offered by the research unit FAM (part of the institute E105) relevant for the FAM curriculum.
In addition, there are further courses available at the institute E105 as well as at the institutes E101 and E104.
Financial and Actuarial Mathematics
Seminar with seminar paper
- 105.135 Seminar with seminar paper (Financial and Actuarial Mathematics) - every semester (W+S)
Bachelor thesis
- 105.113 Project with bachelor thesis (Financial and Actuarial Mathematics) - every semester (W+S)
- 105.165 Project with bachelor thesis (Applications in Financial Mathematics) - every semester (W+S)
Topics for bachelor’s theses
For the currently offered topics, you can contact the bachelor’s thesis supervisors directly:
Using the extended search, you can filter for FAM topics:
=> Extended search
=> Enter in "Keywords":
"Financial and Actuarial Mathematics"
(or in German: "Finanz- und Versicherungsmathematik")
=> To speed up the search, you can also filter by faculty
and institute (organizational unit):
"Faculty of Mathematics and Geoinformation"
"E105 Institute for Statistics and Mathematical Methods in Economics"
If you don't receive a response from a FAM supervisor, feel free to contact the FAM office (fam@fam.tuwien.ac.at). Some supervisors check their emails irregularly.
Bachelor's thesis supervisor
You can choose your Bachelor's thesis supervisor from among the following:
- Lecturers listed in TISS for a current or upcoming “Project with bachelor thesis” - only those can be official Bachelor's thesis supervisors.
If someone wants to write a thesis on a topic that isn’t covered by these official Bachelor's thesis supervisors, there are other options available:
- Bachelor’s theses can be supervised by other TU Wien lecturers or by external parties (e.g. from companies or other universities), as long as they agree to supervise the work at the student’s request and the arrangement is approved by the relevant research group or institute.
In such cases, FAM decides whether the person will act as co-supervisor or main supervisor. For co-supervision, an official Bachelor's thesis supervisor takes on the main role. For main supervision, the person must be listed in TISS as a lecturer for a “Project with Bachelor Thesis” in the respective upcoming semester (by mid/late August for the winter semester, and by mid/late February for the summer semester).
If you don’t choose an official Bachelor's thesis supervisor, please contact FAM office (Sandra, +43-1-58801-10511, fam@fam.tuwien.ac.at).
