Main application deadline

Till February 15th for the upcoming academic year

For an exchange place at a partner university of FAM or TU Wien , and application with TISS > Education > Mobility Services is required.

Only those who are in the "system" can be officially nominated. Please take notice of deadlines for TISS Mobility Services – registrations are only possible within certain time frame (January 1st to February 15th).

The International Office requires a CV, a transcript of records, and a list of planned courses ("preliminary" Learning Agreement) as mandatory application documents.

For the transcript of records, please always upload the transcript covering all fields of study (including your Bachelor’s if you are already enrolled in a Master’s program) and from all universities (if you are or have been enrolled at multiple universities or had exchange semesters/stays).

The list of scheduled courses at a partner university (the "desired university") should ideally include links to the courses (this way, a coordinator can quickly check them — and you can also easily return to the courses). A simple file (Word, Excel, etc. converted to PDF) is the easiest format for both sides.

FAM: For the positions of Erasmus Coordinator Prof. Schmock (FAM), a motivation letter is not necessary (but of course allowed). Overall, we try to avoid any unnecessary paperwork. In unclear cases, we prefer personal contact — so there might be telephone inquiries. Therefore, providing a working phone number in TISS is very important.

If you have any questions, feel free to call the FAM office (afternoons are always better): 01-58801-10511 or 0664-5005638.

Applications in TISS can still be updated till the application deadline (15th February).

FAM: For the FAM positions, Professor Uwe Schmock is the official coordinator – however, the FAM professors (Profs. Gerhold, Rheinländer, and Schmock) decide together on the planned nominations, usually within a few days after the application deadline. You will first be contacted by Sandra and only then officially nominated at the partner university.

Nominations very often depend on the ranking of the universities by the students and also on the decisions of other coordinators. Usually, nominations take place within 4 weeks after the application deadline. However, if nominations (or rejections) are not made within a week or if you are not contacted about this, it’s best to check with the coordinator or the responsible contact person at the university currently being decided on (e.g., the second-choice university if the first-choice university has already rejected you).

Remaining spots

After February 15th

Remaining spots are free exchange places that are not allocated to (main) applications by mid-February. Remaining spots can only be awarded for the summer semester — TISS Mobility Services will reopen its "doors" for this from July 1st to September 1st. Remaining spots can only be allocated if you have an application in TISS Mobility Services.

FAM: For remaining spots, the application deadline might not be waited for — nominations can happen earlier (first come, first served principle). However, we will definitely contact you beforehand.

General information

Branch of study?

Erasmus spots from FAM are awarded to all mathematics students! However, if students are evaluated equally, preference is given to students in the Financial and Insurance Mathematics program for FAM spots.

It's best to apply to multiple universities and reach out to several coordinators. Submitting an application to only one university does not receive any special treatment or advantage over applications that include several universities.

There are also exciting study opportunities that are not assigned to a specific faculty or field of study. See: Available Outgoing Positions: Erasmus (all the way at the bottom under "interfaculty - Interfaculty").

Language proficiency tests

Information about language proficiency tests is available from Ms. Krausler at the International Office.

All nominated students must take a mandatory online language test. The entire process is handled by Ms. Krausler and the language school that was appointed by the EU Commission. The result of the language test is only visible to Ms. Krausler, the respective student, and the officials in Brussels. The host university will only receive the result only when the student forwards the placement result to them. To my knowledge, only two partner universities (DTU Lyngby and La Sapienza/Roma01) have specifically said they accept this placement result. If the score meets their language requirements, they'll waive the need for other, often costly, language tests.

Please make sure to check the specific language requirements of each university — you may still need to take additional (paid) language tests.

New culture / New language

The purpose of the Erasmus program is to get to know a new culture and to learn or strengthen a new language. Therefore, we cannot send students of foreign origin to their home countries (exceptions are students with foreign roots who were born and raised here, i.e., who also attended school in Austria or Germany. Another exception applies to students from South Tyrol, who may be nominated to universities in Italy outside of South Tyrol).

If someone still wishes to be nominated to their home country, we kindly ask for a justification in advance — we would need to clarify whether a nomination is allowed. In any case, if a nomination is made, a justification must be provided for the OEAD database.
